Matt Carpenter helped the St. Louis Cardinals beat two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber in a way no one has before, then he stuck around to make some history of his own.

Carpenter homered twice, matched a career best with five hits and helped chase Kluber in the shortest start of the righthander's career in the host Cardinals' 11-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Carpenter, who also scored a career-best five runs, is the 19th player ever with five hits, including two home runs, and five runs in a game. He is the first Cardinals player to do it.

"I don't know, that leaves me kind of speechless," said Carpenter, who also drove in three. "It's pretty cool.

Kluber (11-4) gave up six runs in 1⅔ innings and has lost two of his past three decisions. He gave up six hits, including homers to Carpenter and Jose Martinez, and walked one on 48 pitches.

Before Tuesday, Kluber's shortest start had been two innings vs. Tampa Bay in 2013. His previous low this year was a five-inning game on June 15 vs. the Twins, when he took his third loss of the season.

"He's human," manager Terry Francona said. "Don't think guys go 35 starts without having a bump in the road."

Carlos Martinez settled down after a rough first inning for his first victory since May 2. He had lost three decisions over his previous five starts.

New York 6, Philadelphia 0: Luis Severino became the majors' first 12-game winner, Aaron Hicks and Didi Gregorius homered and the Yankees beat the host Phillies. Severino (12-2) struck out nine in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 2.10.

Tampa Bay 1, Washington 0: Nathan Eovaldi took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before an unusual combination of relievers in the ninth completed a three-hitter as the host Rays beat Max Scherzer and the Nationals.

San Diego 3, Texas 2: Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe hit run-scoring doubles in a three-run eighth, helping the Padres rally past the host Rangers.

Milwaukee 5, Kansas City 1: Freddy Peralta struck out 10 over seven shutout innings as the host Brewers beat the Royals.

American League

Boston 9, Los Angeles 1: Mookie Betts homered on John Lamb's first pitch of the game, and J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 24th home run to back David Price's six strong innings and lead the Red Sox past the Angels at Fenway Park.

Seattle 3, Baltimore 2: Kyle Seager homered and hit a pivotal two-run single in the eighth inning to back a James Paxton's fine pitching performance and help the host Mariners beat the Orioles.

Houston 7, Toronto 0: Charlie Morton struck out 13 in seven innings and Jake Marisnick hit a three-run homer in the eighth as the host Astros beat the Blue Jays.

Oakland 9, Detroit 7: Jed Lowrie hit the go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning and Blake Treinen converted his 19th save of the season to lead the A's past the host Tigers.

National League

New York 4, Pittsburgh 3 (10): Wilmer Flores hit the walk-off single in the 10th inning as the host Mets beat the Pirates to end their seven-game skid.

Arizona 5, Miami 3: Former Twins catcher John Ryan Murphy drove in three runs to help the visiting Diamondbacks beat the Marlins. Zack Godley (9-5) pitched five innings and allowed two runs and six hits for the Diamondbacks, who are 14-4 in their last 18 games.

Cincinnati 5, Atlanta 3: Matt Harvey pitched 6⅔ innings of one-run ball while Jesse Winker drove in two runs, helping the Reds past the Braves in Atlanta.

Notes

• The Cubs placed Kris Bryant on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, marking the first time the fourth-year player has gone on the DL.

• Orioles righthander Dylan Bundy was placed on the 10-day DL after spraining his ankle running the bases Saturday.
