Tropical Cyclone Olga Slams Queensland

Olga will strike Queensland Sunday, Australia time. Destructive winds as highas 100 mph are expected between Cape Tribulation and Innisfail, including thecity of Cairns. Flooding rains will affect a wider portion of the Cape YorkPeninsula. This cyclone is hitting just days after Tropical Cyclone Olga struckWestern Australia.Tropical rainstorm Olga will continue to soak parts of Western Australia. Olgaproduced 4-8 inches of rain across northern parts of Western Australia onSaturday. Another 2-4 inches will be enough to trigger localized flash floodingSunday. Olga made landfall Friday morning on the Kimberly Coast with winds over100 mph.

While northern Australia is getting battered by tropical cyclones, southernAustralia is basking in beautiful weather. A nice day is expected for theAustralia Open. Sunshine and a high temperature in the upper 70s is expected inMelbourne.

Tropical Cyclone Olga will emerge over the open water of the Gulf ofCarpentaria Sunday night. It is expected to strengthen and hit Australia'sNorthern Territory with hurricane strength late Monday or Tuesday.
