IRONWOOD, Mich. — A trailhead in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula has been dedicated as part of a planned route stretching from the Wisconsin boundary to Detroit.

The Daily Globe of Ironwood and WLUC-TV report Gov. Rick Snyder stopped Monday in Ironwood for a dedication for the trailhead at Miner's Heritage Memorial Park. He says the trail will be a "great opportunity for us to enjoy the wonderful outdoors."

Plans are in the works to fill in gaps between existing trails along the way. Chris Hillier of the Detroit suburb of Taylor has already hiked the route of the proposed trail, which winds through Michigan's urban landscapes, along its waterways and through secluded woods.

Hillier says it's a "beautiful trail."

Snyder has a number of Upper Peninsula stops on his agenda this week.
