Traffic lights on Hwy. 55 at Peony Lane in Plymouth have not been working since early Monday morning and they are likely to remain out until late afternoon, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
Temporary stop signs have been set up at the intersection to control traffic until emergency repairs can be completed, the agency said.
In a tweet, MnDOT said commuters can expect heavy traffic and congestion until the lights are fixed. The agency said it hope to have them functioning by 4 p.m., However, a spokesman said they could be operating within the next hour.
The outage was caused when a motorist ran over the box that controls the signal.
