West-metro wrestlers from Eden Prairie and Orono have committed to Big Ten schools for next year.

Eden Prairie senior Ben Brancale committed to wrestle for the University of Minnesota. Brancale posted a 38-5 record last season when he finished as the Class 3A runner-up at 138 pounds. He placed third at 120 pounds as a sophomore. Brancale's brother, Sam, wrestles at 125 pounds for the Gophers.

Orono senior Jackson Striggow committed to wrestle at the University of Michigan next year. Striggow took fifth place at 182 pounds in Class 2A last season, going 39-7 overall. He is ranked No. 4 at 182 pounds.

Off to a hot start

Breck sophomore Grace Zumwinkle, a Gophers recruit, already has 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) as the No. 3-ranked Mustangs have opened their hockey season with six consecutive victories. Zumwinkle had 37 points as a freshman, including playoffs.

Top performances

• Senior winger Matt Masterman scored five goals and had two assists as No. 1-ranked Edina opened the hockey season with victories over Holy Family and Wayzata.

• Richfield boys' basketball got 21 points from senior guard Kishawn Lewis in its season-opening 88-57 victory over South St. Paul on Saturday.

• Senior forward Connor Kraayenbrink scored the winning goal with 4:56 left in the third period to lift the Chaska boys' hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Simley in the two teams' season opener on Saturday in Inver Grove Heights.

Volleyball recap

Junior outside hitter Ashley Brueggeman had 36 kills as the Eden Prairie volleyball team earned third place in this year's Class 3A tournament with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 victory over Roseville. Senior outside hitter Abby Ihrke had 31 kills, senior setter Elizabeth Mohr tallied 28 set assists and senior defensive specialist Lauren Mattison provided 27 digs. The Eagles, making their fourth consecutive state tournament appearance, finished fourth last year.

New basketball date

The Chanhassen boys' basketball season opener with East Ridge, which was originally slated for last Saturday, was rescheduled to Dec. 6 in Woodbury.
