Magical mystery tours

Ringo Starr may have retired as the conductor on "Shining Time Station," but he and his former mop-tops aren't done teaching children that all you need is love. The animated "Beat Bugs" cleverly weaves Beatles tunes into its 12-minute adventures in which critters living in an overgrown suburban landscape face such dilemmas as trying to think their way out of a discarded jam jar. Kids will enjoy the energetic characters, while parents will groove on covers from Eddie Vedder, Pink and others.

Jungle love

"Koko — The Gorilla That Talks" starts off as a tribute to the 45-year relationship between a charming animal and her trainer, Penny Patterson. But it gradually spools out into the base of a fascinating debate about the ethics and credibility of mankind trying to make the animal kingdom a little bit more like us.
