Top-seeded Kansas blows out Purdue

March 24, 2017 at 5:22AM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Purdue's Caleb Swanigan got chatty with Landen Lucas early in the second half, and that was a time for the Boilermakers to feel confident. They cut a seven-point halftime deficit to four, then to three, and Swanigan's three-pointer made it 53-51 with 16 ½ minutes remaining.

But a few minutes later, Josh Jackson had the ball at the top of the key with Swanigan guarding him, stepped back and buried a three-pointer.

This occurred on the possession after Lagerald Vick's breakaway 360 slam and Thursday's 98-66 rout was on at the Sprint Center.

"When we started to slow down and play our style of basketball, that's when we started rolling," said Kansas guard Frank Mason III, who had 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Devonte Graham also scored 26 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks (31-4), and Jackson had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Things go so loud inside the downtown arena that Purdue coach Matt Painter was resorting to scribbling offensive sets on a dry erase board.

The roars for Kansas only got louder in the second half.

Swanigan had 18 points and seven boards for the Boilermakers (27-8), but the 6-foot-9, 250-pound All-America candidate had to work for all of it.

The Jayhawks rolled to easy wins over California Davis and Michigan State to start the NCAA tournament, and the cold, calculating way they dispatched Purdue should make them the favorite going forward.

If they weren't the popular pick already.
