One of a kind, this guy. Not exactly deficient in the self-confidence department.

It's hard to sum up the career in one post, so let's look at a few short clips. Here's a truncated appearance on "What's My Line," and a reminder of how civil and polite television used to be:

His best role? Everyone will say "Some Like It Hot," of course. Fair enough. But I love this movie, which has some of the meanest dialogue ever. A guy asks him if he did that thing he was asked to do, and he replies "Cat's in the bag, bag's in the river." This is the trailer, and just to complete the 50s feel, it's narrated by Paul Frees.

I think he was at his best in black and white.

A 2008 Interview - a little longer, but you see how he was doing towards the end.

Finally, from your host's archives: a shot from Look mag, 1956, with wife Janet Leigh and his first daughter, Kelly.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat. It’s too soon to tell how much the immigration crackdown is to blame.
