Banwart, a student at Minnesota State Mankato, has had a passion for fishing since making his first catch — a sunnie off a dock on Lake Clitherall near Battle Lake — when he was 2½ years old. Banwart, who works in the fishing department of a sporting goods store, caught and released this fish May 23.

River fishing

Ellen Jesmok of Eagan caught this 27-inch, 7-pound walleye on the Mississippi River near South St. Paul on Sunday. Jesmok was bobber fishing with night crawlers.

Big smallmouth

John Janousek of Breezy Point caught this 7-pound, 15-ounce smallmouth bass on an undisclosed lake last week. The fish was 23 inches long and had a 21¼-inch girth. After being weighed at a bait shop, it was released. It was one ounce shy of the state record.
