In some ways, it makes no sense to think the Vikings would take Tim Tebow with the No. 30 overall pick in the first round of the NFL draft tonight. This is a team built to win NOW, with a narrow window of opportunity. And while there aren't a ton of glaring holes for a team that went to last year's NFC title game, there are definitely areas that can use upgrades and/or bolstering -- including the lines on both sides of the ball, where a first-round pick could help tremendously.

But here is why we keep thinking more and more that the Vikings will snatch up Tebow if he is available when they pick tonight:

*The Vikings have a history of making successful splashes in the draft. Randy Moss, Daunte Culpepper, Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin were all somewhat risky and/or unorthodox picks at the time. You can't argue that all four worked out to a pretty impressive degree (even Daunte haters).

*The Vikings don't have a QB of the future, and Tebow has a chance to be special. Nobody questions his leadership or the other intangibles. Even if he doesn't wind up being great, he can still be useful -- which sometimes can't be said for QB prospects who don't quite pan out.

*Tebow could be a short-yardage monster even next year. Brett Favre had 9 carries for 7 yards last year. The QB sneak and other short-yardage QB runs were not part of the play book last year. Tebow could play a few very important snaps every game in 2010, so it's not like he doesn't give the Vikings anything short-term.

*Minnesota has seven more picks after the first round with which it can add depth. And the Lito Sheppard signing last night erased one of those depth needs in the short-term.

*Quick-hits: Symmetry. The last time the Vikings were led by a veteran QB to the brink of the Super Bowl, they followed up by drafting a QB (Culpepper) in the first round. ... Even the TimTeblog thinks it's going to happen ... It's about the right slot for Tebow to be drafted and, at worst, wouldn't be much of a reach. ... It would create a media convergence unlike anything we've ever seen with Tebow and Favre on the same team ... It's just crazy enough to work, and just sane enough for the Vikings to really do.
