Gov. Mark Dayton is a hockey guy. He played goalie for Yale once upon a time. Saw him at Frozen Four.

Now he has proclaimed Wed., April 13, as UMD Bulldogs Day in Minnesota to honor their men's hockey team which beat Michigan 3-2 in overtime last Saturday for the NCAA Division I title.

The city of Duluth will honor the team at 6 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.

UMD TOPS POLL

In the final USA Today hockey poll, UMD is a unanimous No. 1 pick.

Eight teams remained in the top 15 all season, including the Bulldogs who were previously No. 1 for three weeks earlier in the season, from Nov. 15 to Dec. 5, 2010.

Other No. 1 teams this season: Boston College, Boston University, Miami, North Dakota and Yale.

The WCHA has five teams in the final poll, the CCHA four. Voters in the poll are coaches and media members representing all five NCAA Division I conferences, as well as one composite vote from the officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine.
