Birds and herbs

Gertens is holding four free workshops on Jan. 26 that cover everything from houseplant care to winter tree pruning. "Houseplants 101" explains repotting, fertilizers and plant varieties, 10 a.m.; "Herb Plants" shows how to grow herbs indoors, 11 a.m.; "Backyard Birding" offers tips and tricks on attracting birds, 1 p.m.; and "Winter Tree Pruning" gives how-to instruction on shaping and managing trees and shrubs, 2 p.m. The workshops are at the garden center, 5500 Blaine Av., Inver Grove Heights. Call 651-450-1501.

Winter farmers market

Local growers and vendors will defy winter and offer their wares in the greenhouse comfort of Bachman's Lyndale Garden Center. The indoor Fulton and Kingfield Winter Markets are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 and will feature locally grown food and locally made baked goods, preserved foods, crafts, clothing and gift items. Family-friendly entertainment and wine, hard cider, beer and food trucks also will be at the site, 6010 Lyndale Av. S., Minneapolis. Call 612-861-7311.

Library gardening

Start planning your best garden ever at your local library. Master gardeners will present 10 free programs in February at Hennepin County Libraries on a wide range of topics including small space vegetable gardening, edible landscapes, annual flowers for cold climates and the best plants for tough sites. For a schedule, go to www.hclib.org/pub/events and type "Master Gardener" in the search box or call your local library.
