Topher Grace and Dan Fogler, stars of the upcoming comedy "Take Me Home Tonight," stopped by the Star Tribune Thursday to talk up their film. A "one crazy night' movie set in the late Eighties, it's yet another period comedy for Grace, star of TV's "That 70s Show."
Grace, who plays a video store clerk masquerading as a Goldman Sachs investment banker to impress his dream girl, claims he prepared for the role "by being a loser in high school." Like his character, Grace was a Suncoast Video employee for two summers. "I thought that I was going to watch movies all summer and it was going to be amazing. And then when I got there they showed one movie all summer. And it was 'Space Jam,' the worst movie of our time. Literally, there's no actors in it. It's Michael Jordan playing basketball with cartoon characters. And I watched that maybe 5,000 times."
Fogler play Grace's manic best buddy, a huckster car salesman who rocks a Gordon Gekko power suit and slicked-back hair. "I think the Eighties were the rabid peacock of decades," said Fogler, a Tony-winning Broadway veteran. "Everything was OUT THERE! The fashion, the music. Everything just seemed to be in your face." Grace said he wanted this nostalgia trip to recreate the special Brat Pack experience of acting in a large, young ensemble. His costars include Anna Faris, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black and Demetri Martin. "I really wanted to do a John Hughes movie," Grace said. The film combines that vibe with a bit of Cameron Crowe, some "Risky Business" and a pinch of "Jackass" stunt-comedy. Look for more from the actors and our review on opening day, March 4.
