A 16-year-old girl was hit and killed by a speeding vehicle Friday night near 36th and Emerson avenues N., Minneapolis police said.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle before it hit the girl, but the driver fled. After the accident, about 9:55 p.m., the suspect continued driving for a short time before jumping out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The vehicle was still moving at the time and crashed into several parked vehicles.

The suspect was arrested about a block away as he tried to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family, police spokeswoman Catherine Michal said.

A handgun was found in the suspect's vehicle. The man had two felony warrants out for his arrest, Michal said.

The victim and suspect were taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. The girl was pronounced dead there. Her name will be released by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.
