Bulletproof vests are routine on cop shows, but the idea that a piece of fabric can stop a deadly projectile is still impressive. So, too, are the new "techno textiles" on display at the University of Minnesota's Goldstein Museum. Fabric-covered walls that glow with luminosity embedded in the fibers. Digital displays incorporated into upholstery. Heart-monitoring electrodes woven into the fabric of sports bras. These are just a sample of the miraculous textiles changing the way we live. Other new trends include sustainable fabrics made from recycled plastic, corn-based cellulose and organic polymers. Tiny electrodes in the fabric of the NuMetrex Heart Rate Monitoring Sports Bra, shown here, check the heart rate and display the results on a watch. Cool.
