TCTOD: In hindsight -- Gophers, Vikings or Twins. If only one could win, which would it be

Jon Marthaler asks an uncomfortable question just to see you squirm.

October 6, 2009 at 4:39PM

Jon Marthaler of Weekend Links fame sends along this quick note, which he frames as The Commenter Talker Of the Day:

Saturday was the Gophers vs. the Badgers. Last night was the Vikings vs. the Packers. Tonight is the Twins vs. the Tigers in Game 163. Three big games; now imagine that you could only get one win. Which would you pick?

This is, of course, a hindsight question since the Gophers have already lost and the Vikings have already won. It also frames things in a negative light -- as Jon is wont to do! -- because the Twins needed a small miracle just to force this No. 163, and those three games over the Royals were memorable to fans on their own.

But we still like the question as it stands. Before you give a "hands-down" answer, consider the consequences of each loss: a Gophers loss to a rival starts a possible downward spiral into a 4-8 season; a Vikings loss to a rival starts a round of "is Favre really the savior" question and puts the Vikings in a tight spot the rest of the year because of Green Bay's schedule. A Twins loss, of course, ends their season -- though some people (not us) might argue that's a blessing in disguise because of the pummeling awaiting in New York.

Your thoughts? We're heading over to the Dome soon to work the Tigers' clubhouse. We're hoping our five days stalking Tiger Woods at the PGA somehow translates.
