Target Corp. has added another former Amazon.com executive to the growing ranks of its supply chain team as it looks to speed up deliveries to customers' doorsteps to better compete with the online giant.

The Minneapolis-based retailer hired Preston Mosier to be senior vice president of fulfillment operations. In addition to overseeing the warehouses that send products directly to consumers, he will be in charge of process improvement, customer experience and product management in that area. He starts next week.

Mosier will report to Arthur Valdez, a 16-year Amazon veteran who joined Target this spring to be its chief supply chain and logistics officer. Amazon initially sued Valdez when he took the job with Target, worried that he would spill trade secrets and alleging that he violated the online giant's noncompete clause. A Target spokeswoman confirmed that the two parties have settled the issue. Terms of the agreement are confidential, she said.

That will not be an issue for Mosier, who worked at Liquidity Services, an online auction marketplace, for five years after leaving Amazon, where he led the start-up and operations of various fulfillment centers.

Last month, Target also hired Ben Cook, an Apple executive, to be its senior vice president of global logistics, inventory application and replenishment.

Both Mosier and Cook are filling new positions as Target modernizes its supply chain to better keep up with a fast-changing landscape that has been disrupted by online shopping.

"A top priority for our guests is to get what they ordered quickly, accurately and without hassle," Valdez said in a statement related to Mosier's appointment. "Target already has a strong operation to move product in bulk to stores, so bringing the online fulfillment function under a specialized leader will enhance our direct-to-guest operation. Preston's experience using technology and data to deliver smaller packages directly to consumers will help us continue building capabilities that will put product in guests' hands even faster."
