Light rail service at the Union Depot in downtown St. Paul reopened late Thursday after a suspicious item led to an hourlong closure.

Metro Transit police responded to Union Depot just after 9 p.m. on a "suspicious bag or package," said spokesman Howie Padilla.

Metro Transit tweeted the closure about 9:10 p.m., and reopened light rail service at 10:20 p.m.

Padilla said that although the exact nature of the item in question remained unclear, the scene was cleared.

Green Line trains were temporarily replaced with buses between Union Depot and the 10th St./Cedar station while police investigated the item.
