A Robbinsdale police officer is out of the hospital Thursday morning after he was injured during a traffic stop that escalated into a confrontation.

The officer stopped a motorist around 11 p.m. Wednesday in the vicinity of 48th and Welcome Avenues N. in Crystal. The motorist got out of his vehicle, did not comply with the officer's command and then ran away. That is when the officer heard what was believed to have been a gunshot that also was heard on the squad's dash cam recorder, said Robbinsdale police Sgt. Thomas Rothfork.

The officer was not hit, but did suffer a leg injury that caused him to collapse near his squad. He was treated at North Memorial Medical Center and released, Rothfork said.

Police from several agencies descended on the scene and set up a perimeter in the area.

A person of interest was detained, Rothfork said.

Robbinsdale and Crystal Police are investigating.
