The Who's Two at the Super Bowl: Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. What did you expect from the Who? At best, the Two's half-time performance was solid with predictably spectacular light show. I call the Who the Two because it's down to two original members, singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend. At the Super Bowl halftime on Sunday, they were supported by drummer Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's kid) and bassist Pino Palladino plus a second guitarist and keyboardist. Neither of the Two provided much rock 'n' roll spark as they tore through a 13-minute medley of their classics: "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley,""Who Are You," "See Me Feel Me" (a chorus) and "Won't Get Fooled Again." The on-again, off-again Who has released only one album of new material in 25 years. That was "Endless Wire"—remember it? -- in 2006. I ask the NFL: Why the Who? Have the pro football poobahs run out of classic-rockers? Ever since the Janet Jackson /Justin Timberlake wardrobe malfunction in 2004, it's been a safe slate of classic rockers. And, frankly, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and especially Prince gave exciting halftime shows. The NFL could have done better than the Who. If they wanted a safe band with deep roots, how bout Bon Jovi? Or John Mellencamp? John Fogerty? Or even Kiss? Maybe the NFL could have gone contemporary with Black Eyed Peas or Beyonce. Or a trio of hot country guitar heroes—Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. The NFL fumbled on this halftime show. And don't get me started on Queen Latifah and Carrie Underwood doing "America the Beautiful" and "Star Spangled Banner" before the game. Well, at least the game was exciting.
