Put a scarf on it

There's nothing wrong with wearing a T-shirt, jeans and flats when you're traveling. In fact, this simple ensemble can keep you comfy whether you're flying or driving. But adding a printed scarf will up your style quotient instantly.

Go for something large but lightweight β€” cotton or silk β€” and tie it loosely for a perfectly undone look. Multicolored prints are versatile and timeless, but a black-and-white print is an equally chic option.

Scarves are ideal for air travel because cabin temperatures can go from boiling to freezing in a single flight. A lightweight scarf makes it easy to cover up when temps drop, and just as easy to strip down when things heat up.

It's in the bag

Doing the TSA Check-in Shuffle is never fun, but keeping your bags manageable will help. If you're a dedicated purse carrier, try a cross-body bag for travel. This trendy style is surprisingly practical: It frees up both your hands, keeps your bag secured to your torso and eases the burden on your back and shoulders.

Choose a size that will accommodate your essentials without getting too bulky. Cross-body handbags are well-suited for road, train and bus travel, too, since they are relatively small and flat. They also make great companions on any trip that will involve long days of walking.

Add some sparkle

Jewelry often gets overlooked when packing, but it is an essential finishing touch. Everything you wear will look more polished when completed with jewelry. Plus, there are plenty of pieces that are travel-friendly.

Opt for tiny earrings that won't cause security issues at the airport, such as studs, gem drops or small hoops. If you wear a lot of necklaces, choose a longer, clasp-free strand of beads. They won't get caught in your hair when you recline in your airplane, car or train seat. If you like bracelets, slip on a set of stretch bracelets, which are lightweight, comfortable to wear, and easy to slip off.

Be a jersey girl

Yes, yoga pants and hoodies are blissfully comfortable. And, yes, they're often made from travel-ready jersey knits. But there are dozens of other less casual garments made from that same sumptuously soft fabric that will give you a more stylish look.

Try tunics, leggings, artful tees and waterfall cardigans. Add your printed scarf and chic cross-body bag, and you'll be ready to take on Madrid, Marrakesh or Milwaukee.
