It was a night of music for this well-dressed couple. Ian Ludwig got his shirt from Express and his vest in Canada and Sindy Griggs got her entire outfit from Forever 21. She kept cooing over her shoes, which had 4-inch heels that made her almost as tall as the 6-foot-3-inch Ludwig. But not quite.
Five questions for Yeohlee Teng Fashion designer Yeohlee Teng came to the Twin Cities last week for a visit. The Malaysian-born, New York-based designer, known for being highly innovative, was feted at JV & Co. and the Goldstein Museum of Design, where she donated one of her timeless pieces -- a Teflon wool cashmere open-back cape from her fall 2007 Yeohlee collection. Her designs are a rare combination of cerebral and wearable. We grabbed a few minutes with her.
Q What is the fifth season?
A Richard Martin [former chief curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute] coined the term to describe my clothes. They're seasonless. In today's world, that's more meaningful than ever. It enables the urban nomad to cross those borders. You're in Minneapolis and you can be an urban nomad in the sky bridges -- you don't have to be Nanook of the North!
Q What is the idea behind the cape that you donated?
A It exemplifies my core philosophy: Good design is forever. There is zero waste in the construction of the garment, so it is a more intelligent thing. And it really is one-size-fits-all.
Q Can you explain the zero-waste idea?
A We maximized use of the fabric, so there is less wasted. It's a way of thinking about sustainability in a common-sensical way.
Q What is coming up for spring 2010?
A It started with more color and pictures of tropical birds. It's about the shape of sound. We just nicked the surface of it, though.
Q Why do Minnesotans connect with your clothes?
A They're smart!

Just in time for holiday shopping, there's a new Arc's Value Village Thrift Store & Donation Center opening in St. Paul (Hillcrest Shopping Center, N. White Bear Av.). Following a 9 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, the first 300 shoppers will receive a free reusable shopping bag containing coupons and goodies.
Humans aren't the only ones who need a little extra warmth through the winter. Through April 22, donate real fur items (apparel, trim, accessories and shearling) at Buffalo Exchange (2727 Lyndale Av. S., Mpls., 612- 871-9115). The furs will go to the Humane Society of the United States to be used as bedding for orphaned and injured wildlife.
