Sure, your kids have probably tried the sainted Honeycrisp apples, but have they tried Minnesota experimental apples 1849, 1807 or 1731? All of these varieties are available to try and buy at the University of Minnesota's AppleHouse, just west of Chanhassen on Highway 5. (And, yes, the Honeycrisps are still in. The apple harvests, it seems, have been a week or so behind the usual schedule this season.) Call the apple hotline at 952-443-1409 for daily updates on availability.

The upcoming weekend is a can't-miss chance for a family road trip out to the AppleHouse; the greatest variety of apples are usually available now, and the leaves are reaching their peak for color. The library at the nearby Minnesota Arboretum is also having its annual book sale this weekend, with books and media selling for $2 or less.

Stuff to Do is an occasional series of off-beat activities for children and families:

  1. Pavek Museum of Broadcasting
  2. Spring Skiing in Lutsen
  3. Civil War Summer Camp
  4. Family Paddle on the MinnehahaKitchen Science for the End of the Summer Blues
