That would seem to be the definition of a vicious cycle, yes, but it's still difficult to believe that the producers of reality TV shows might not be motivated primarily by altruism. This really changes everything. It's like suspecting "Survivor" isn't about encouraging children to develop self-reliance skills. Once you're down that road you're not going to trust television at all.
