The Star Tribune 100 is a measure of the largest publicly held companies with headquarters in Minnesota ranked by revenue. Data presented also include each company's total profits from continuing operations, assets and market capitalization. The research excludes closely held companies, which usually do not disclose financial data; cooperatives and fraternal benefits organizations, and local over-the-counter stocks.

2008 Star Tribune 100 Survey Questions

The mail survey was conducted by Star Tribune researchers in February and March and was sent to 141 publicly held Minnesota-based companies. Sixty companies responded for a response rate of 43 percent. Not all companies responded to all questions. Contributing by category

Among Minnesota's 100 biggest public companies, financial services firms contributed the most profits in 2007, followed by manufacturing and health care. Retail and service firms accounted for the biggest portion of sales and the most jobs. The state's most valuable firms, as measured by market capitalization, are in manufacturing.

Market performance

Minnesota's biggest publicly traded companies added sales and profits, but market value fell 8.4 percent.
