St. Thomas will try to win its 32nd consecutive MIAC men's indoor track and field championship when the three-day meet opens Thursday at Carleton College in Northfield. Last year the Tommies led St. Olaf by only four points after Friday's events and won by 20 — one of the closest finishes in the meet's history.

St. Thomas is ranked No. 4 in Division III's Central Region, the Oles No. 5. The Tommies are led by Brian Jarvey, who has swept the 200- and 400-meter dashes the past two years. The Oles return two national champions, Paul Escher in the mile and Jake Campbell in the 3,000.

• In the women's indoor meet, St. Thomas will chase its 17th title in a row. Last year the Tommies won by 112.7 points over Bethel. Emily Gapinski of St. Thomas returns as the defending champion in the 1,000-meter and 1-mile runs.

Hamline's Carolyn Saulsberry won the hurdles and triple jump a year ago, and she's seeded first in each. Carleton's Ruth Steinke hopes to win a second consecutive title in the 3,000-meter run, as does Augsburg's Callie Jones in the 60.
