St. Thomas shot 57 percent and posted a season scoring high in a 99-73 victory over 11th-ranked Whitman on Friday in an NCAA Division III round-of-16 game in Rock Island, Ill.

But the eighth-ranked Tommies women, hosting the Division III round of 16, lost 70-66 to unranked Wartburg, which has beaten two ranked teams on the road in the past week.

Kaitlin Langer had 27 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Tommies (27-3).

The Tommies men shot 57 percent in their win. Guard Grant Shaeffer led four UST players in double figures with 18 points. Jimmy Remke and Cortez Tillman each had 17, with Tillman's points all coming in the first half.

Division II women

Winona State overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and beat Fort Hays State 60-55 at the NCAA Central Region tournament in Pittsburg, Kan. The Warriors (30-3) limited the Tigers, who shot 51.6 percent in the first half, to 14 second-half points on the way to the second NCAA tournament victory in the program's history. Tara Roelofs led the Warriors with 24 points.
