A St. Paul man left his bedridden mother in an unsanitary three-season porch with no food, water or medication because the woman was unable to pay rent, according to charges filed Thursday.

The 56-year-old woman was found on a mattress and box spring held up with cinder blocks with "several plastic bags of urine and feces on the floor," according to the charges.

Adam J. Labrie, 34, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with one count each of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult and criminal neglect of a vulnerable adult.

According to the complaint: The woman called police to the home in the 1100 block of Jackson Street about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday. Officers found the woman inside a front porch with windows covered in blankets.

The woman told police that she moved in with Labrie and his wife in September and agreed to pay $300 a month in rent. Labrie had taken on some of his mother's caregiving needs, including providing food and water and a scooter for occasional outings. Her medical issues include diabetes, a cardiopulmonary disorder and neuropathy in her extremities.

The woman said that her son raised the rent to $400 a month and locked her out of the house when she was unable to pay the rate.

"She had been there all day without food and water, and additionally reported that for the previous four days she had been given very little food, having only cookies and Mountain Dew," the charges said. "She had not received any of her diabetes medication."

Electricity had been cut off to the porch, the door to the home was locked and the woman could not access her walker or scooter, the charges said.

Police contacted Adult Protective Services and the woman was taken to Regions Hospital.
