A St. Paul man convicted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in 2000 was given a new prison sentence Thursday afternoon.
Aeropajito C. Vazquez, 50, was sentenced to 33 years and 10 months in 2001 on a second-degree murder conviction.
He filed a motion for a reduced sentence, and was sentenced in Ramsey County District Court Thursday to 30 ¼ years. He was credited for about 13 years he's served in prison.
Vazquez's motion, filed in early June, said he's shown remorse for his actions, has always cooperated with the court and has participated in several self-improvement programs in prison.
Vazquez shot Yolanda Pagan on July 20, 2000. Pagan called 911 to report the attack, and Vazquez commandeered the phone and said the two shot each other.
When police arrived to Pagan's apartment on St. Paul's West Side, Vazquez was in the front yard waving a gun.
He went inside, a gunshot was fired, and then he returned outside with a bullet wound in his abdomen.
Vazquez and Pagan, who have four children together, broke up two months before the shooting.
