A St. Paul man has been arrested under suspicion of murder, in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this week in the Midway district.

Police found a man shot Tuesday night near Hamline and Marshall avenues, close to Concordia University. The victim was identified in a police report as Jeffery Earl Willingham, 24.

According to the report, officers on patrol heard what they thought could be shots about 11 p.m. Tuesday. When they checked the area, they found Willingham down on the sidewalk along the north side of Marshall, just east of Hamline. Police determined that he had been shot, and called for medics.

St. Paul police said that Willingham was taken to Regions Hospital, where he underwent surgery. However, police learned Wednesday morning that he had died.

According to jail records, a 26-year-old man was arrested near Hoyt and Western avenues on Wednesday afternoon in connection with the case.
