Turkeys, walleyes and deer. Those are the subjects today. Here are the details: SPRING TURKEYS Minnesota turkey hunters have more time this year than they have had in the past to apply for this spring's hunt. The deadline has been extended, and the DNR now will take them through Jan. 14. Also new this year: the youth application process is eliminated, which means kids 17 and younger by April 13 aren't eligible for the lottery and can buy their license over-the-counter. Also, all hunters can buy over-the-counter permits for the hunt's last two time periods. Officials still suggest you don't wait until the last minute to apply for a license. ETHICAL DEER HUNTERS The DNR, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and Turn In Poachers again are asking hunters to share stories of exemplary hunting behavior by nominating hunters for the 18th Annual Minnesota Deer Hunter Ethics Award. The award will honor a deer hunter who has exhibited conduct during the 2010 season that can serve as a positive example to all hunters. Awards for youth and adult divisions will be presented to the selected recipients at an upcoming MDHA event held in their vicinity. Nominate a hunter by writing a letter or e-mail explaining the actions of the nominee and why that person is worthy of this recognition. Both youth and adults are eligible, but nominees must be Minnesota residents. The incidents must have occurred during any of the 2010 Minnesota deer hunting seasons. Nominations will be accepted until Jan. 21. Letters should be sent to Ethical Hunter Award, MDHA, 460 Peterson Road, Grand Rapids, MN 55744-8413, or faxed to 218-327-1349, or e-mailed to kimhanson@mndeerhunters.com. WALLEYE RULES The walleye regulations have changed for the winter season on Upper Red Lake. The slot reverted back to a 17-to 26-inch protected slot limit beginning Dec. 1 and running through the winter walleye season. The daily and possession limit remains at four, with one more than 26 inches allowed.
