Spotlight: Minnesota Orchestra season opener "Espana"

September 12, 2008 at 4:54PM

BRUSH UP YOUR SPANISH Thursday-Saturday: Spain is an intensely musical country, but its composers were slow to master the resources of the modern orchestra -- which is why many popular "Spanish" pieces are the work of non-Spaniards. Case in point: Emmanuel Chabrier's color-drenched "España," which launches the Minnesota Orchestra's sixth season under music director Osmo Vänskä. Also kicking up their heels are Joaquín Rodrigo (in his bewitching "Concierto de Aranjuez," with Minnesotan Sharon Isbin as guitar soloist), Manuel de Falla and, from our own hemisphere, Alberto Ginastera and Aaron Copland. (11 a.m. Thu., 8 p.m. Fri.-Sat. $21-$83. Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Mpls.
