The first full week of the season is in the books, and already some teams are emerging as contenders.
Several significant games take place this week, particularly on a Saturday full of enticing matchups.
In the north, Bemidji visits Duluth East, Greenway travels to East Grand Forks, and Alexandria meets the newly combined squad from St. Cloud.
In the east metro, Stillwater's potent offense faces a defensive-minded Cretin-Derham Hall, Hill-Murray hosts Mahtomedi, and a crucial Class 1A matchup between between St. Cloud Cathedral and St. Paul Academy is sure to draw a crowd.
Wayzata and Breck square off in the west metro, and Farmington travels to face Lakeville North in a growing rivalry in the South Suburban Conference.
But the Northwest Suburban Conference might hold the best pair of matchups this week. On Saturday Anoka travels to Maple Grove for a rematch of last year's section final and Elk River heads to Centennial in a game between teams ranked in the top 10 in Class 2A.
With the Elks and Cougars clashing for early control of the conference standings, the contest is a clear choice for our Top Game of the Week.
