June is off to the races in terms of warm temperatures for both theSouthwest and southern Plains.endure even warmer temperatures, which may challenge many records later thisweek and weekend.

The stage will be set for well above normal high temperatures from Friday intothe weekend as a very strong ridge of high pressure builds overhead and the jetstream lifts northward.

Widespread 100-degree-plus heat will be common each day across southeasternCalifornia, southern Nevada, the Arizona deserts, as well as places fromeastern New Mexico to western Oklahoma and central Texas. By Saturday, 100scould extend into central Oklahoma and east-central Texas.

Some cities set to experience the stretch of triple-digit heat include PalmSprings, Calif.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Carlsbad, N.M.; Lawton, O.K.;Wichita Falls, T.X.; and San Angelo, Texas.

Temperatures should even crack the 110-degree mark along the border of Arizonaand California and possibly pockets of northern Texas.

To put the upcoming heat wave into perspective, these numbers will exceednormal early June highs by 15 or more degrees. Numerous record highs will bechallenged.

You can prepare for the upcoming sizzle by making sure your air conditioningsystem is working properly or by purchasing multiple fans.

The orientation of the jet stream will keep the Northwest and northern Rockiesfrom experiencing the blazing heat. The Midwest and Northeast will also avoidthis particular hot spell. Meanwhile, the California coastline will benefitfrom the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean. Temperatures there will remain morecomfortable than places inland.
