Free meals available again this summer

District 197 is again participating in the Minnesota Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program.

The district will provide free breakfast and lunch at three schools to all children 18 and under. No registration is required; to receive the meal, children just need to show up.

Free meals will be served at the following locations:


Henry Sibley High School Cafeteria, 1897 Delaware Av., Mendota Heights

Breakfast: 7:30-9:30 a.m.

Lunch: 10:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

June 11-July 11: Monday-Friday (No service July 3 or 4)

July 14-Aug. 7: Monday-Thursday


Moreland Arts & Health Sciences Magnet Cafeteria, 217 W. Moreland Av., West St. Paul:

Breakfast: 7:30-9 a.m.

Lunch: 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

June 11-Aug. 14: Monday-Thursday


Garlough Environmental Magnet Cafeteria, 1740 Charlton St., West St. Paul:

Breakfast: 8-9:30 a.m.

Lunch: 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

July 14-Aug. 7: Monday-Thursday

Aug. 11-22: Monday-Friday


The Summer Food Service Program assists local organizations, such as schools, to operate programs to provide nutritious meals and healthy activities for children during the summer when meals and activities held during the school year are unavailable.


District forms stadium committee

A group of parents, community members, administrators and school-board members in the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan district has formed a stadium advisory committee.

The committee will look at whether relocating the Henry Sibley football stadium, Matson Field, to the high school’s campus in Mendota Heights is a possibility.

It’s now across the street from Heritage E-STEM Magnet Middle School in West St. Paul.

In fall 2013, moving the stadium was discussed by a facilities task force, but the group thought the school board should study it more and consult the community before moving forward.

A group of stadium advocates contacted school board members in January to ask that the district consider including the stadium in the May referendum that was being planned, knowing that relocating the stadium would likely require bond funding.

In February, the board agreed to continue discussing the idea, but decided not to include the project among referendum projects.

This page is not only an organizational tool for committee members, it is also open for any community member, teacher, staff member or parent interested in following what the group does. The committee will present findings to the school board in late July.


South St. Paul

Lincoln Center has new principal

The South St. Paul district has hired Michael Fugazzi as the new principal of Lincoln Center Elementary.

Fugazzi will replace Connie Garling, who will become the district’s new director of equity and integration.

Fugazzi began teaching in the Mankato district as a 5th- and 6th-grade classroom teacher. While in Mankato, he also served as an elementary-math coach, a continuous-improvement coach, and summer-school administrator.

Following his time in Mankato, Fugazzi served as an assistant principal in St. James. Most recently, he served as principal of Lakeview Elementary in Albert Lea.

Fugazzi holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota, Morris; a master’s degree from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota; and an education-specialist degree from Minnesota State, Mankato.
