Fishing contest lets kids cast

Kids who want to participate in the free Kids Fishing in the Neighborhood (FIN) tournament in Prior Lake on Friday, June 26, are urged to register early.

The tournament will be held in two locations from 9 a.m. to noon: the FIN pier at Jeffers Fish Pond, 3429 Jeffers Pkwy. NW., and the FIN pier at Crystal Lake at Hwy. 13 and Village Lake Dr. SE.

Kids can bring their fishing gear or it will be provided for them. There will be goody bags for everyone.

Author signs college history books

Susan Hvistendahl, author of "Historic Happenings at Carleton College" and "Historic Happenings at St. Olaf College," will read and sign books at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Village on the Cannon Community Room, 301 7th St. W. The books are compilations of Hvistendahl's Entertainment Guide columns focusing on unique people and events at Northfield's colleges.

Refreshments will be provided.

Night Crawlers band returns for singalong

Carleton College's popular 1960s rock band, the Night Crawlers, will return to Northfield for an "Oldies Singalong" on Thursday, June 18 at Froggy Bottoms River Pub/Lily PADio, 307 Water St. S.

The free show will start at 8 p.m.

Marc Reigel will play classics from the 1950s and 60s on keyboard with lead singer Barry Gillespie on vocals, Wendy Smith on guitar and Rae Rusnak on harmonica. Songbooks will be provided.

Prior Lake

Neighborhood parks host Tuesday parties

The Prior Lake Parks and Recreation staff will visit a different park every Tuesday evening through July to host a party for children and families. The parties, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., will feature crafts, games, a police car, a fire truck and special entertainment.

This month's parties will be June 16 at Northwood Meadows, 2995 Hawk Ridge Road NW, and June 23 at Timber Crest Park, 4846 Bluff Heights Trail SW.

Music in the Park

series begins June 17

Savage's Music in the Park series starts Wednesday, June 17. The performances are all from 7 to 8 p.m. at the McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center in Community Park. People are urged to bring lawn chairs.

The Teddy Bear Band, a group that caters to kids and families, plays June 17. Other acts planned for June and July include Hanson & Hoyt, The Blue Drifters, The Splatter Sisters, The Eelpout Strings, Stomp n' Dixie and Island Steel Drum Band.

Free workshop

about hoarding

People with questions about hoarding disorder are invited to a free educational session hosted by Families and Individuals Sharing Hope (FISH) on Thursday, June 11.

The class at the Physical Development Department building, 600 County Trail E., Jordan, will be led by Scott County Public Health Nurse Brittani Schmidt. She will share basic information about hoarding and suggest ways to approach someone who may be struggling with hoarding. She will also talk about guidelines for disposing of household waste.

SHAKOPEE

Wheelies revolves around biking

The 23rd annual Wheelies Bike Event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Huber Park, 150 Fillmore St. N. in Shakopee.

There will be a police surplus bike auction, door prizes, refreshments, tricycle and training-wheel races, bike registration, safety information and a bike helmet giveaway.

At 5:30 p.m., citizens can take a bike ride with Mayor Brad Tabke. The Splatter Sisters will perform at 7 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, the Police Department, Community Education and Allina Health.

Torch Run planned for Special Olympics

Mark your calendars for the Shakopee Police Department's Torch Run to raise money for Special Olympics on Wednesday, June 17. Special Olympics athletics will start the run at 9 a.m. The approximately 4-mile course will take runners, bikers and rollerbladers through the city. A bus will be available for people needing a break.

The cost is $25 per person or $20 for law enforcement personnel and includes a T-shirt. The Special Olympics also will be donating three used bicycles as door prizes.
