Quick Q&A: Alec Kandt, Simley, Sr.

Kandt concluded his prep swimming career as a state champion. The future Michigan State swimmer took first place in his final individual race, winning the Class 1A 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.62 seconds. Here is a closer look at Kandt:

Three words or phrases my teammates might use to describe are ... passionate; outgoing; hard worker.

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are … "You're Going Down" by Sick Puppies; "No Worries" by Lil Wayne; "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.

At my first varsity practice, I was… probably a little to excited and probably had lots of energy. I was in seventh grade.

What is your favorite meal prior to a meet? It would probably be scrambled eggs or a Subway sandwich.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? My most memorable moment swimming for Simley High School was my freshman year. We beat St. Thomas Academy, going 10-0 on the season, becoming the Classic Suburban Conference champ. It also ended St. Thomas Academy's 14-year undefeated streak.

What does it mean to go out as a state champion in your final year? It meant a lot to go out a state champion my senior year. The last four years I've been second, third and fourth, so it meant a lot for me to know that my training finally paid off.

Lastly, a state title and second-place finish (100-yard butterfly) in your last two individual high school races. Could you have done or asked for anything more? No, I couldn't have asked for anything more. I picked the two hardest strokes and to be able to get a first and a second is a great feeling for me. It was a great ending to a fun and memorable high school career.
