Five things you might not know about Sherlock Holmes:
• He is the most filmed fictional character, with 75 actors playing him in 211 movies since 1900.
• His "deer stalker" cap was a concoction of illustrator Sidney Paget, not Arthur Conan Doyle.
• Doyle never mentioned a curved pipe for him, either.
• He never said "Elementary, my dear Watson" in the books -- only in the movies.
• In Old English, the word "sherlock" meant fair-haired. But the actors most associated with him (Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Robert Downey Jr.) all had dark hair.
