Better late than never. Just two months before his retirement, longtime WCCO, Channel 4, journalist Don Shelby was named outstanding anchor at the Upper Midwest Regional Emmys, the first time he has won in that category.

Shelby also was honored Saturday night at the Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis as best commentator for his "Good to Know" segment.

KMSP, Channel 9, took home the most hardware: 18 awards, including best evening newscast. KARE, Channel 11, which won 16, was honored for station excellence -- the equivalent of getting best picture at the Oscars.

"WCCO This Morning" and "KARE 11 News Sunrise" tied for best daytime newscast in a major market.

Among the other stations, KSTP, Channel 5, won 10 awards -- including best sports anchor for Phil Aldridge. WCCO got eight, and Twin Cities Public Television had five.

The Star Tribune was honored in four categories, including Richard Tsong- Taatarii as best multimedia journalist.
