Screen Plays: Saturday's conference championship games to watch

BIG TEN NO. 1 OHIO STATE (12-0) VS. NO. 8 WISCONSIN (10-2)

7 p.m. in Indianapolis • Ch. 9

Big Ten West Division champion Wisconsin has a lot to prove Saturday. After winning the Big Ten's first two title games in 2011 and 2012, the Badgers have lost each of their past three appearances in Indy — twice to the Buckeyes. They also lost 38-7 at Ohio State in October.

In that meeting, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young wreaked havoc on the Wisconsin offensive line, recording six tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles. The Buckeyes also held Wisconsin star Jonathan Taylor to a season-low 52 yards on 20 carries.

Wisconsin sacked Justin Fields five times in that game and limited him to 167 passing yards, but the quarterback still threw for two of his 37 touchdown passes this season in that game, while J.K. Dobbins ran 20 times for 163 yards and two more TDs. Fields, this week named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, suffered a left knee injury Saturday vs. Michigan, but he and first-year coach Ryan Day both say it's fine.

The Buckeyes need to beat the Badgers for the eighth meeting in a row to secure a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff. A loss might not be enough to knock them out, but they likely don't want to test that theory after being left out each of the past two years despite winning the Big Ten championship each time. The Buckeyes are trying to become the first Big Ten team to win three consecutive conference championship games and are putting an 18-game winning streak on the line, too. Anything short of playing for a national championship under first-year coach Ryan Day would be a major disappointment for Ohio State.

SEC NO. 2 LOUISIANA STATE (12-0) VS. NO. 4 GEORGIA (11-1)

3 p.m. in Atlanta • Ch. 4

Georgia needs to win to earn a berth in the playoff. Given LSU's quality victories (Alabama, Auburn, Florida), the Tigers can probably weather a loss and still make the playoff. The Tigers rank second in the nation at 48.7 points per game and have scored at least 50 points in their past three games but figure to find a much tougher go of it against Georgia's stout defense. The Bulldogs have given up the second-fewest points in FBS (10.4 per game) while posting three shutouts for the first time since 1981.

BIG 12 NO. 6 OKLAHOMA (11-1) VS. NO. 7 BAYLOR (11-1)

11 a.m. in Arlington, Texas • Ch. 5

The winner is looking to leapfrog Utah and Georgia to earn a spot in the playoff. Oklahoma is seeking its fifth consecutive Big 12 championship and its fourth playoff berth in five seasons. Baylor is in its first Big 12 Championship Game and could avenge its only loss, 34-31 at home three weeks ago when the Sooners overcame an early 25-point deficit for their biggest comeback ever.

ACC NO. 3 CLEMSON (12-0) VS. NO. 23 VIRGINIA (9-3)

6:30 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C. • Ch. 5

Clemson is looking to keep alive its 27-game winning streak and earn a spot in a fifth consecutive playoff. After beating North Carolina 21-20 on Sept. 28, Clemson has won its past seven games by 30 or more points, and Trevor Lawrence has thrown for 23 TDs and three interceptions over that span. The Cavaliers seek their first ACC championship since sharing the crown with Florida State in 1995.
