Impact Academy approved for coming school year

The Lakeville school board voted unanimously to offering Impact Academy as an option for students in kindergarten through third grade beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Housed in the media center at Orchard Lake Elementary, the model will provide about a hundred students with the chance to learn and advance at their own pace, regardless of grade level. Core subjects like reading, writing and math will still be taught. The program emphasizes service learning as well.

Orchard Lake will continue to offer the traditional elementary classroom setting for the rest of the students at the school. Parents must choose the program for their child, with registration beginning in April. According to the school board, the program will be cost neutral.

Further decisions about the next two phases of Impact Academy's development will be made in the coming year, with plans to offer the option to fourth- and fifth-grade students in the future.
