This may be the first time you’ve heard of the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, but if Abdul Kassim has his way, it won’t be the last.
Kassim started a soccer program, then went on to open a free secondary school to create opportunities for girls in Kibera, a poor neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya. Volunteers, many of whom live in the Twin Cities, now serve on the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy Foundation.
Kassim recently traveled to the metro area as part of a multi-city fundraising tour. Money raised on the tour, including a stop at Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, will go toward teacher salaries and building a community center that will provide safe housing and health services for students.
