Augusta, Ga.

Sammy Schmitz played his first nine holes at The Masters in even par. That's the kind of start that leads to big dreams. But he flew the green on 10 and played the next seven holes in nine over par before parring the 17th and 18th. That seven-hole stretch of frustration left Schmitz needing a remarkable round on Friday to make the cut.

Schnmitz was upbeat after the round, focusing on the front nine and the large number of followers he had at Augusta National. The keys to the round might have been his two wedge shots into the par-5s on the back nine,.

On 13, he took a large divot and left the ball in the water before taking a seven. On 15, he flew the green and took a six.

``I'm going to go home, have a beer and enjoy my friends," he said.

I'll have much more on Sammy and the leaders in tomorrow's paper.
