NETGEAR ARLO PRO 2 $479.99
This camera system is a good security option

It is always impressive when a next-generation product is really an upgrade. Netgear's Arlo Pro line of wireless surveillance cameras had a great reputation and a pretty wide following, and the new Arlo Pro 2 takes some significant steps forward to make it a very compelling choice if you are searching for a video camera system to monitor your home.

What's new?

Netgear's Arlo Pro is a system of battery-powered wireless cameras that communicate through a hub connected to your home network.

The Arlo Pro 2 system takes things up a notch or two. The resolution is better, and you can choose battery or electric power. You also can choose to continuously record video or limit it to when motion or sound is detected.

The cable-connected cameras also allow for the user to set specific zones to watch for motion instead of capturing motion from the entire field of view.

You control the system through either a web portal or through an app on your smartphone or tablet. The app is nicely designed and not hard to navigate. You can see a snapshot of what your cameras are seeing, and there's a button on each one to start a live view (with two-way audio).

The Arlo Pro 2 system includes free seven-day rolling cloud storage for up to five cameras. Tech support is limited to 90 days. Upgrade packages range from $120 to $199 a year.

Nice comes with a price, so if you are looking for a cheap system, Arlo is not it. The Arlo Pro 2 system with two cameras and a hub costs $479.99. A four-camera system is $799.99. Additional cameras are $219.99.

SOMNOX $699
Cuddle with a pillow that will help you sleep

The Consumer Electronics Show always rolls out interesting new products. The Somnox, for example, is a robot you can cuddle with. It is a bed companion that simulates human breathing. When you hug the robot, the rising and falling sensation subconsciously calms you down and helps you get to sleep faster, say its makers. Somnox can also make the soothing sounds of heartbeats, lullabies and guided meditation, which you activate from an app. Best part: It doesn't ever snore.

It starts shipping in September.
