DULUTH, Minn. — No one was hurt when a replica biplane crashed into Superior Bay in Duluth.
St. Louis County Undersheriff Dave Phillips says the plane came in too fast and crashed into the water shortly after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A chase boat was already in the water and immediately picked up the pilot and towed the plane to shore.
The Lark of Duluth is a replica of a float plane that flew into Duluth in 1913. The replica was the center of an aviation festival last weekend.
Tom Betts and Mark Marino spent the last five years putting together the replica. They were not ready to fly it during the weekend festival due to the weather.
WDIO-TV (http://bit.ly/12uyBoS) reports the plane's frame sustained heavy damage, but fuel and radiator fluids were contained.
