A St. Cloud man relaxing at a northwestern Minnesota cabin with family members over the Labor Day weekend dove into shallow water, broke his neck on the lake bottom and died despite loved ones quickly pulling him out, authorities said Tuesday.

Todd J. Steinke, a vice president with a medical center foundation in St. Cloud, hit his head shortly before sunset Saturday on the bottom of Cable Lake, near Mentor, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Steinke, 47, was near the shoreline when two family members pulled him out of the water after seeing him dive in, the Sheriff's Office said. Among those nearby were Steinke's wife and daughter.

Paramedics tried to revive Steinke, but he was declared dead at the scene, according to authorities.

An autopsy performed at the University of North Dakota's forensic and pathology lab revealed a broken neck.

Steinke was director of development for CentraCare Health Foundation. He was in charge of the foundation's finances and its community collaboration and grants committees. He joined the foundation in 2004.
