three players to watch

• Clemson recruit Hunter Johnson of Brownsburg, Ind., was rated the No. 1 QB in the nation by ESPN. Already enrolled, he'll be given a chance to replace Deshaun Watson, who is entering the NFL draft.

•Tackle Isaiah Wilson (6-7, 350), a five-star player from Brooklyn, N.Y., was one of seven players in Georgia's signing class listed as at least 300 pounds. Guess coach Kirby Smart got the size he was looking for.

• Florida State secured the nation's top running back and No. 2 overall prospect — Cam Akers of from Clinton, Miss. The Seminoles must replace star tailback Dalvin Cook, who has entered the NFL draft.

Family ties

• Among the players brought in by Purdue was QB Griffin Alstott of St. Petersburg, Fla. He is the son of Boilermakers all-time leading rusher Mike Alstott.

• WR Hunter Rison signed with Michigan State. His father, Andre Rison, was a star at Michigan State from 1985-88 and ranks second on the school's career list in yards receiving.

• WR Will Swinney, the son of Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, will join the Tigers as a walk-on.

kobe who?

Illinois State signed a 6-7, 285-pound offensive lineman named Kobe Buffalomeat. Buffalomeat played center at Lawrence High in Kansas and was the No. 2,254-ranked player in the country, according to MaxPreps.com. His name was quickly trending on social media Twitter and Facebook. "He couldn't walk and chew bubble gum last summer," Lawrence coach Dirk Wedd said. "Then he figured it out. By the end of the season, he was first-team all-conference."

• Florida, 30th in the team rankings just a few days ago, made a late surge and climbed to No. 10.

• DE Donovan Winter, who was supposed to sign with Michigan State, is still in the Seminole County jail near Orlando, Fla., after being arrested Monday night and charged with armed burglary and theft of a firearm.

• Baylor, a program still dealing with the fallout from a sexual assault scandal, signed 27 players.
