Record-Challenging Heat in the Northwest

August 19, 2009 at 12:25PM

The latest spell of very warm to hot weather over the Pacific Northwest willreach its peak today. Highs will rival records as they soar into the 90s andeven the 100s over some areas across Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Many people will head for public places with air conditioning, since manyhouseholds do not have air conditioning in this part of the country.

Seattle will miss out on the worst of the heat with the high expected to reachinto the middle 80s.

By Thursday, the large ridge of high pressure, which has been deflecting therain and cooler weather away from the region, will begin to weaken and retreat.

Afternoon temperatures will begin to slide slowly downhill over the next fewdays, but most of the region should stay dry through the end of the week. Afront could bring some showers to the Northwest coast by the weekend.
