RandBall: NBA playoff scenarios strain math skills

April 10, 2018 at 12:14AM

It might be a while until we are witnesses to a more bonkers playoff scenario in any professional league than the one we are witnessing in the NBA's Western Conference this season.

That was pretty clear entering the week, and it became even more crystallized for me when I attempted to write a tidy blog post Monday morning about the Timberwolves' playoff scenarios.

I used more than 1,000 words, and it was still pretty much the equivalent of a shrug emoji.

The only things that were consistently true: Winning takes care of a lot of things for the Wolves, and the tiebreakers are generally in their favor.

Every scenario from getting the No. 4 seed and first-round home court advantage to missing the postseason entirely were still in play for the Wolves heading into Monday.

The games are stressful enough. The math just adds to it.
