Former Rep. Jim Ramstad, once a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, will soon be lending his Washington expertise to a Houston-based tax firm.

Alliantgroup, LP, an "independent specialty tax firm," announced Wednesday that they have brought on the Third District Republican as a senior advisor. Alliantgroup works with accountants to help companies take advantage of all possible tax benefits.

Alliantgroup CEO Dhaval Jadav said in an interview that Ramstad's primary role will be as a "spokesperson" for the company, letting small to medium-size businesses know about the benefits available to them (a task which might incidentally bring in some new clientele).

He will also dabble in lobbying, though Jadav was unsure whether it will be enough for him to register as a lobbyist.

"[Ramstad]'s very close with alot of people in Congress, both in Minnesota and with our federal government as well. So he is going to be kind of our liason as well. He's going to be speaking to them about the issues that are affecting small and medium-sized businesses."

In announcing the hire, Alliantgroup stressed Ramstad's background on Ways and Means, particularly his position as chairman of the Oversight Committee.

"Our mission is to give clients the best tax expertise available and to be their voice in Washington, and Congressman Ramstad has the precise background and experience to help us deliver that for them," Jadav wrote in a statement. "He not only knows the code, but he knows how it was designed to help businesses large and small.

One of the former lawmaker's first events for the company will be at a June 21 event at the Minneapolis Club, which will feature a range of businesses. Ramstad will be based in Minnesota.

Ramstad left Congress in 2009 and was succeeded by Republican Erik Paulsen. A recovering alcoholic, he joined the Center City-based Hazelden Treatment Center in February as a senior policy adviser.
